Fundraiser at $8K – Will It Reach 10K?

Zocalo’s Fundraiser for Davis Street Family Resource Center is booming! Thank you to all who have been so generous to date. We’ve had so many $5, $25, and $100 donations it’s amazing, and we’ve now received our third $500 Tree Topper donation!

At the moment we’re at $4000, or $8000 with matching funds from Zocalo. We’re hoping to reach $10,000 by the end of the year and only have 6 days left. That means we need only $170 a day in donations! Can you make our day?

It’s as simple as bringing cash or check (made out to “Davis St.” to Zocalo. We’ll match whatever you donate automatically and you can, if you choose, decorate and hang your own ornament! From $5 up, it all ads up… hopefully to $10,000 by the 31st!

Merry Christmas to all.

Thanks to the Daily Review and reporter Jason Sweeney for doing a story on the Davis Street Fundraiser we’re doing. It’s a great story and was front and center in Wednesday’s local section!

San Leandro coffeehouse a fundraising hotspot
“Until Jan. 1, customers can purchase ornaments for the shop’s 9-foot Christmas tree with proceeds going to Davis Street. Holmes is matching the donations until the combined total reaches $10,000.”

Decorate for Davis St. – A Fundraiser

We’re having a fundraiser!

hearts

Decorate the Zocalo tree by donating ornaments and all the money goes to San Leandro’s own Davis Street Family Resource Center!

Davis Street has helped tens of thousands of families in their nearly 40 years serving us. This past year the demand for their services was up five fold.

Ornaments range from $5 hearts to the $500 for the tree topper! Zocalo will match all donations up to a total of $5000 for a total of $10,000 to Davis St. combined.

Come down to Zocalo starting Tuesday and buy one for your family! A donation to Davis Street is the perfect gift to your community.

SLCAN: 1st Thurs: Child Nutrition

SLCAN’s First Thursday event is tonight at 7pm! Local experts Kinkini Banerjee, MS, and Jill Rodgers-Quaye, Ph.D. are presenting. Here’s the writeup from SLCAN:

Children’s early years are critical in shaping their physical, emotional and social well-being. Reinforce lifelong eating habits to help them develop a healthy lifestyle. Toddler or a teen, you can encourage them to eat smarter, move more, learn better and grow up to their full potential.

We’ll review the factors that make your child vulnerable to developing a negative body image and a range of eating and weight related problems and discuss what you can do to help buffer your child from these risk factors.

Corbett Holds SL Hospital Town Hall

DSC_5280State Senator Ellen Corbett is holding a town hall on the fate of San Leandro Hospital. With the purchase by Sutter now denied by the Eden Township Medical Board, what will happen to our hospital and ER?

Corbett’s Town Hall will be held Thursday, August 27th at 6pm at the San Leandro Main Library.

Board to Sutter: No Hospital for You

DSC_5474San Leandro Bytes reports the Eden Township Healthcare Board voted to not approve Sutter Health’s purchase of the San Leandro Hospital last night.
This is great news as it opens up new avenues for saving the hospital and ER. The board also voted to get legal council on the lease and other aspects of the deal, as well as look into the financial and other numbers provided by Sutter.

Photos of Health Care Town Hall line

Congressman Pete Stark’s Health Care Town Hall was held this morning at 10:30 at City Hall. Over 450 people showed up, though there turned out to be capacity for only 120.

Things were civil. Many more signs for reform were present, reports from in the hall were that random questioners were more like half pro and half against. You can see photos here.

Zocalo.com 2.0

New Zocalo siteYou likely can’t tell much of a difference, at least if we did our job right, but this is an entirely new website from the ground up from just yesterday.

The old site was getting creaky and had technical limitations. We’ve taken a big jump forward with the new site, introducing RSS support, comments (soon), tags, categories, and search. We’ve moved a more interactive method of communicating. Take a look around and let us know what you think!

Thanks to Jenn Voss of J. Voss Creative (San Leandro resident and Zocalo regular) who brought this all to fruition.

San Leandro Starbucks closing…

According to the latest news the Starbucks at 1443 E. 14th is closing along with six others in the bay area.

This is especially good fortune for Mariese and Norbert, owners of Planet Cafe, a locally owned cafe which preceded Starbucks in the area and has, thankfully, outlasted them. Their food is fantastic and we eat lunchthere often. Don’t miss their crepes on the weekends!
